1991 Disney Great American Celebration: Mickey’s Balloon Ride, Roger Cam & Fireworks Finale

In 1991, Disney’s 4th of July broadcast was reimagined under a bold new name: the Disney Great American Celebration. The one-time event, hosted by Connie Sellecca and Robert Guillaume, celebrated America’s 215th birthday with coast-to-coast musical numbers, character appearances, and patriotic tributes.

A Coast-to-Coast Red, White & Blue Reboot

This time, the spotlight stretched across Disneyland and Walt Disney World with a fresh approach. The broadcast started with Tevin Campbell’s high-energy “Sweet Freedom” performance at Disneyland. At the same time, Mickey Mouse took flight in his hot-air balloon, “Ear Force One,” to see how the country celebrates the 4th of July. He eventually landed at EPCOT Center’s American Adventure Pavilion. In Epcot, Mickey is welcomed by a marching band, while at the same time, back in Disneyland, A marching Band and children’s choir join Tevin to close out the opening number.

Honoring Volunteers Through the Points of Light Program

One of the most powerful additions to the 1991 special was the inclusion of President George H. W. Bush’s Points of Light program, which recognized everyday Americans for their volunteer service. Throughout the broadcast, Disney highlighted real-life stories of generosity and community support, aligning with the President’s national initiative. These “Points of Light” profiles brought the entertainment a deeper layer of meaning.

Featured Highlights from the 1991 Special

  • Three Disney Parades: The broadcast featured segments from Disneyland’s Celebration USA Parade, Walt Disney World’s Disney Hit Parade, and the Main Street Electrical Parade.
  • Celebrate the Bill of Rights: To mark its 200th anniversary, the celebration spotlighted American freedoms and values.
  • Mickey’s Star-Spangled Journey: Mickey Mouse’s balloon ride briefly looks at the American landscape before culminating in a celebration at EPCOT’s American Adventure.
  • Roger Cam: From Disneyland, we check in with Roger Rabbit.  Roger Cam offered a segment on the “Points of Light” volunteer families at Typhoon Lagoon and Mickey’s House.    In the second segment of Roger Cam, Roger finds himself in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids playground at Disney MGM Studios.  Roger Cam continues in Mickey’s Starland, with a look inside Mickey’s house.
  • Presidential Spotlight: President George H. W. Bush introduced the “Points of Light” initiative, highlighting volunteers across America and connecting the Disney American celebration to the initiative.   President Bush introduced the 500th daily point of light, a family from Chicago who has volunteered to provide for their local community.  The spotlights continue throughout the program.
  • Comedian Steven Banks appears from the American Adventure Pavilion at EPCOT Center with a unique comedic twist on American history.  Our second check-in with Steven is a unique comedic take on Thomas Jefferson and writing the Declaration of Independence.
  • Connie Sellecca takes us on a Disneyland “Mountains” tour, starting with Big Thunder.  The tour continues with Splash Mountain, where Connie attempts to reflect on the true meaning of Independence Day.  The Matterhorn Mountain was mentioned, but there is no footage of her riding. She heads to Space Mountain with Bill Campbell and Jennifer Connelly for the Rocketeer.
  • Comedian Tim Allen, Star of the new sitcom coming this fall, Home Improvement, delivered one of his first major network appearances.

Notable Musical Performance for the 1991 Special

  • Tevin Campbell: Tevin opens the special with a “Sweet Freedom” performance from Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.  The song continues to follow Mickey and his journey on Ear Force One to EPCOT Center’s American Adventure Pavilion.  Creating a unique performance of cuts between Tevin at Disneyland and Mickey in Walt Disney World.  Tevin returns later in the program with a music video of “Just Ask Me To.”
  • Country Rock and Soul: Live from the Neon Armadillo Music Club at Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island, the Kentucky Headhunters deliver a spirited rendition of “The Ballad of Davy Crockett,” followed by a rocking version of “Spirit in the Sky.” It’s a rare look inside one of Pleasure Island’s six original nightclubs.
  • Backstage at Disneyland’s teen-focused Videopolis stage, Sheena Easton brings high energy with “You Can Swing It” and later returns to perform “To Anyone.”
  • Barbara Mandrell performs from Disneyland’s Frontierland. She offers a heartfelt version of “When You Get to the Heart.” Later, she debuts her newest single, “Feed the Fire.”
  • Teen Energy: Pop group The Party, made up of former Mouseketeers, performs “Peace, Love, and Understanding” in front of the Chinese Theater at Disney-MGM Studios.
  • Disney’s “This is America” cast performs at the American Garden Theater.
  • Emerging from the Disneyland Tomorrowland Stage, it’s C+C Music Factory. The group closed the musical acts with “Here We Go Rock and Roll.”
  • The Coast to Coast family starts at the American Adventure in Epcot and quickly transitions to Disneyland for a children’s choir led by Robert Guillaume singing “God Bless America” in Town Square. This is followed by a fireworks presentation that cuts between multiple locations at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Sam’s 10 Observations from the 1991 Broadcast

  1. One and Done: This was the only year Disney branded the event as the Great American Celebration.
  2. Hot Air Balloon Magic: Mickey’s balloon adventure served as the coast-to-coast connection from Disneyland to Walt Disney World.
  3. Points of Light Initiative: Disney featured real volunteers in President Bush’s Points of Light Program and highlighted them through the Special.
  4. Roger Rabbit’s Final Appearance?: Roger’s “Roger Cam” segments were among his last major TV appearances before the character faded from the parks.
  5. EPCOT’s American Adventure Center Stage: The patriotic theme placed EPCOT American as the Walt Disney World core of the celebration, including views of the American Garden Theater before its renovation.
  6. Disneyland + Walt Disney World in Sync: The dual-park format highlighted shared values and unique offerings across resorts.  It also included unique video cuts for the opening and closing fireworks number, synchronizing Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
  7. Mickey’s Starland Promotion: Roger Rabbit did a quick tour of Mickey’s Starland, but it was nothing like the full tour the year before.
  8. The Disney animated classic 101 Dalmatians was re-released in theaters on July 12, 1991. This was the last time it would appear in theaters, making $60 million in the US.  In anticipation, the Disneyland Parade features 101 Real Dalmatians along with Cruella De vil, a nice touch.
  9. Tevin Campbell’s Music video includes interesting set locations, including the sailing Ship Columbia.
  10. The Disneyland Celebration USA Parade includes some interesting floats that we haven’t seen often. The parade highlights life in America, including the Celebration USA Float, Suburbia USA, The Heartland Ranch with Old MacDonald Ducks, Fresh Eggs, and Produce. A float for “Working in the City” includes the Big Bad Wolf as the Boss. Yep, you read that right. A nice touch was the Spirit of Pride, a salute to Olympic athletes who have competed for Team USA.
