1996 Walt Disney World Easter Parade: Toy Story & Disney Institute

The 1996 Disney Easter Parade aired on ABC on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1996. Hosted by Regis Philbin and Joan Lunden, with field reports from J.D. Roth and Brianne Leary, the special blended classic Easter fun with a look at what was new around Walt Disney World.

From the start, the broadcast leaned into Easter energy at Magic Kingdom. A bunny hopped down Main Street, U.S.A. to open the show. Then Mary Poppins and the chimney sweeps followed with a lively musical number. As a result, the parade opened with a classic Disney feel.

A Visit to the Disney Institute

One of the most memorable segments focused on the Disney Institute. J.D. Roth and Brianne Leary explored the new destination and showed how guests could take classes and learn new skills. Brianne joined a Gifts from Your Garden class and then tried topiary making. Because of that, viewers got a closer look at one of Disney’s newer vacation experiences.

Toy Story Parade at Disney-MGM Studios

The 1996 special also captured a major Disney moment at Disney-MGM Studios. Toy Story had quickly become a hit, so the broadcast highlighted that momentum with a Toy Story-themed parade. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang brought fresh energy to the special. At the same time, the segment showed how fast Disney was building park entertainment around the film.

The Lawrence Brothers Explore Disney’s Water Parks

The show also made room for adventure beyond the parade route. The Lawrence Brothers from Brotherly Love raced across Bay Lake in a Ski Ray before splitting up to visit Disney’s water parks. Their segment showed off Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, and River Country. In turn, the parade promoted more than Easter entertainment. It also highlighted the wider Walt Disney World vacation.

Why the 1996 Parade Still Stands Out

What makes the 1996 broadcast memorable today is its mix of Easter tradition and 1990s Disney expansion. The special still delivered celebrity hosts, festive performances, and springtime charm. However, it also served as a snapshot of what was new across Walt Disney World in 1996.
