A Tribute to Chakranadi: The Soulful Sitarist of Disney Animal Kingdom

The sounds of the sitar once filled the air in the heart of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Visitors to the Anandapur village were captivated by these mesmerizing tunes. Chakranadi, the stage name of the talented musician Stephan Mikés, gifted these melodies to the world. His performances transported guests to a tranquil realm. Notably, they showcased the deep connection between music and nature.

Celebrating a Musical Legacy

Stephan Mikes mastered the sitar, a 19-stringed instrument with movable frets rooted in ancient Indian tradition. This instrument remains significant today. His repertoire at Disney’s Animal Kingdom included original compositions like “Celebration,” “Cashmere Express,” “LeapFrog,” and “Late for the Moon.” These pieces resonated with the park’s theme. Furthermore, they reflected the belief that each musical note links to a different animal.

Beyond his performances at the park, Stephan’s dedication to his craft was evident throughout his life. Stephan passed away on October 21, 2023, at 69. His wife, Bonnie, shared the news, honoring his memory.

Consequently, many visitors found themselves entranced by his melodies. His performances often made them feel as if they had been transported to another place and time.  Stephan not only entertained but also educated guests. He consistently illuminated the cultural significance of the sitar and its ties to nature. As a result, his invaluable contribution to musical heritage preservation enriched the experiences of countless guests and left an indelible mark on Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
