A New Era Begins: The Grand Opening of Disney California Adventure
Disney California Adventure opened to the public on February 8, 2001, marking the first new theme park at the Disneyland Resort since the original park’s debut in 1955. Designed as a tribute to the spirit and culture of California, the park’s grand opening was accompanied by a special television broadcast that offered fans a first look at the attractions, theming, and behind-the-scenes magic.
The Stars Come Out for Disney’s Newest Park
The Disney Channel Opening Day special featured a star-studded lineup including Richard King, Barry Bostwick, Colin Mochrie, Brad Sherwood, Patrick Warburton, Jacklyn Zeman, Nancy Lee Grahn, John Ingle, Erin Hershey, Kiko Ellsworth, John Lasseter, and Michael Eisner. Directed by Jerry Reese, the special highlighted many of the park’s signature attractions and offered viewers a sneak peek into the new experience.
One of the highlights was actor Patrick Warburton introducing viewers to Soarin’ Over California. His humorous and enthusiastic segment included a behind-the-scenes look at the ride’s innovative ride system and uplifting score—one of the many touches that made the attraction an instant classic.

This opening day special is a time capsule of Disney California Adventure as it first appeared in 2001. Guests and viewers were introduced to lands like Paradise Pier, Hollywood Pictures Backlot, Golden State, and more. The special emphasized Disney’s commitment to storytelling and immersive experiences, even in a park designed to celebrate a real-world location.
