The fifteenth episode of The Disney Family Album highlights Ollie Johnston Disney, a legendary animator and train enthusiast. Originally airing on The Disney Channel in August 1985, this episode explores his remarkable contributions to Disney animation and his lasting influence on the company.
Ollie Johnston Disney and Walt’s Love for Trains
In addition to animation, Ollie Johnston Disney shared a deep passion for trains with fellow animator Ward Kimball. As early as 1949, he built a miniature backyard railroad, known as the La Cañada Valley Railroad. This personal hobby played a significant role in shaping Walt Disney’s interest in model trains.
Inspired by Johnston’s enthusiasm, Walt created his own Carolwood Pacific Railroad in his backyard. Eventually, this fascination led to the development of the Disneyland Railroad, an iconic attraction that still operates today.
Legacy and Recognition
After retiring from Disney in 1978, Ollie Johnston Disney continued to inspire the next generation of animators. In fact, in 1995, he and Frank Thomas were featured in the documentary “Frank and Ollie,” a film that explores their lifelong friendship and artistic contributions.
As a result of his incredible work, Johnston earned the prestigious title of Disney Legend. Even today, his influence can be seen in modern animation.
