A New Era Begins at Walt Disney World
On October 1, 1982, EPCOT Center officially opened its gates to the public. However, that first day felt more like a soft launch, with only Spaceship Earth receiving its official dedication. The true grand opening festivities took place weeks later, from October 15 to 27, and culminated with the CBS broadcast of EPCOT Center: The Opening Celebration on October 23.
A Televised Celebration Before the Dedic
The television special aired the night before EPCOT’s official dedication. Hosted by actor and comedian Danny Kaye, the special. The opening day special was filmed in advance due to poor weather during the real ceremonies. Kaye acknowledged the rainy conditions with a quip from atop the American Gardens Theater, joking that he was speaking “live and wet from EPCOT Center.”
Throughout the special, 7-year-old Drew Barrymore joined Danny Kaye on a journey of discovery through the new park. Viewers got a glimpse of EPCOT’s promise: a blend of imagination, innovation, and culture on display across Future World and World Showcase.
Star Power and Musical Performances
The CBS special included a range of performances and appearances. Marie Osmond and Roy Clark performed with author Alex Haley in front of the upcoming Equatorial Africa Pavilion. Journalist Eric Sevareid reflected on Walt Disney’s enduring legacy.
One of the most memorable moments was EPCOT’s dedication plaque, still visible today at the entrance of the park. Signed by then CEO E. Cardon Walker, it reads:
To all who come to this place of Joy, Hope, and Friendship – Welcome. EPCOT is inspired by Walt Disney’s creative vision. Here, human achievements are celebrated through imagination, wonders of enterprise, and concepts of a future that promises new and exciting benefits for all. May EPCOT Center entertain, inform and inspire, and above all, may it instill a new sense of belief and pride in man’s ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere.
This grand opening special captured the essence of EPCOT’s ambitious mission and remains a nostalgic time capsule for Disney fans worldwide.
