Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios just celebrated its 30th anniversary, and summer 2019 brought with it a wave of anticipation. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge loomed just a few months away from opening, and excitement filled every corner of the park.

While Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run would soon welcome pilots from across the galaxy, and Rise of the Resistance promised a second major debut later in the year, Star Wars wasn’t the only thing heating up the park.
Guests arriving before Galaxy’s Edge opened still had plenty of ways to experience the Star Wars universe—Star Tours: The Adventure Continues, Launch Bay, March of the First Order, A Galaxy Far, Far Away, and the explosive Galactic Spectacular Fireworks.
But this summer, something brand new and high-octane was also delivered, right from the world of Pixar’s Cars.
What Is Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy?
New for Summer 2019, nestled just past Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster in the Sunset Showcase, you’ll find Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy. This family-friendly experience brings Pixar’s Cars universe to life in a brand-new way.

Outside the theater, the courtyard sets the tone with photo ops featuring Cruz Ramirez and the legendary Piston Cup. Don’t miss DJ’s Ready! Set! Party Time!, a high-energy dance party where DJ spins Cars-inspired tunes, and kids can join games and dances inspired by Radiator Springs.
Then, it’s time to cruise into the theater for the main event.
Step Inside the Racing Academy
The Racing Academy officially opened on March 31, 2019, and runs continuously throughout the day. The show lasts around 10 minutes and transforms guests into rookie racers, eager to learn from the legend himself—Lightning McQueen.

Lightning appears live on stage, thanks to cutting-edge animatronics, backed by a massive 17-foot-tall, 200-foot-wide wraparound screen. This immersive screen places you right in the middle of the action as Lightning shares racing wisdom gathered over his storied career.
His biggest lesson? Even when the race doesn’t go as planned, you can always get back on track with support from your friends.
