Before Magic Kingdom’s massive Fantasyland expansion began in 2011, I had the chance to visit Disneyland and explore its version of Fantasyland for a long-awaited comparison. The trip reminded me how charming, unique, and surprisingly different Disneyland’s Fantasyland is for those used to Walt Disney World.
Familiar Yet Different
You’ll recognize iconic attractions like Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mad Tea Party, and it’s a small world—but even these come with their own Disneyland-specific flair. For instance, it’s a small world at Disneyland includes outdoor elements and Disney character cameos that make it a must-see, even if you’ve ridden it in Florida.
One-of-a-Kind Disneyland Exclusives
What truly sets Disneyland’s Fantasyland apart are the classic attractions you can’t find in Walt Disney World—or at least not anymore. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Alice in Wonderland, Casey Jr. Circus Train, and the Storybook Land Canal Boats offer a timeless, whimsical charm that’s refreshing to longtime Disney World guests. They reflect Walt Disney’s original vision and remain rooted in Disneyland’s rich storytelling tradition.
The Unique Placement of Familiar Faces
Attractions like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Ariel’s Undersea Adventure exist at both resorts, but in different lands or parks entirely. In Disneyland, Winnie the Pooh lives in Critter Country, while Ariel’s ride is found over in Disney California Adventure—a twist that may surprise Florida fans used to seeing these in Fantasyland.
Why the Comparison Matters
As Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland expansion brings new attractions and reimagined experiences, it’s worth appreciating how Disneyland’s version served as a blueprint and continues to offer a nostalgic experience. From the architecture to the ride styles and layout, each park offers a unique spin on what it means to bring fairytales to life.
A Personal Take from Sam’s Disney Diary
For my family of five, Disney Parks have always been our favorite escape, and sharing that magic through Sam’s Disney Diary has become a passion project. Visiting Disneyland and experiencing Fantasyland in its original form allowed us to connect with Disney history in a fresh way—and it’s something every Walt Disney World fan should do at least once.
