The First Disney Princess Takes the Stage

In 1969, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs made its stage debut at The Muny in St. Louis. Bringing Walt Disney’s first animated feature to life in a dazzling theatrical experience. On October 18, 1979, Snow White premiered at Radio City Music Hall. This Broadway-style adaptation of the beloved film featured original songs from the 1937 animated classic, along with new musical numbers composed specifically for the production.

The show starred Mary Jo Salerno as Snow White, with a cast that brought the Seven Dwarfs, the Evil Queen, and other beloved characters to life. With lavish sets, large-scale choreography, and magical effects, the production delivered a visually stunning experience. The energetic performances and detailed staging captivated audiences throughout its run.

Although the production was successful, it only ran for a limited time. It closed on November 18, 1979, to make way for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. However, due to popular demand, Snow White returned on January 11, 1980, for an additional 68 performances, concluding its run on March 9, 1980. In total, the show ran 106 times at the iconic venue.

A Rare Home Release

In 1981, Disney released a VHS and Betamax recording of the Snow White stage show, allowing fans to enjoy the production at home. As a child, I watched this special repeatedly and struggled to find it again. This video is presented for historical content only—it is not monetized and serves to educate those unfamiliar with this version of Snow White. The recording remains a rare and cherished piece of Disney’s stage history.

Although the Snow White stage show had a limited run, it set the stage for future Disney theatrical adaptations. As one of the first major stage musicals based on a Disney animated film, it paved the way for Broadway hits like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The production blended Disney storytelling with Broadway spectacle, ensuring its place in theatrical history. Even today, its influence is recognized as an important milestone in Disney’s live entertainment legacy.
