A Story Passed Through Generations
During the summer of 2019, Disney California Adventure hosted a vibrant and powerful stage production of Tale of the Lion King. Performed at the Palisades Stage near Pixar Pier, this limited-time show brought Simba’s journey to life in a unique, story-theater style featuring live music, dance, and cultural celebration.

The production was led by Mwongozo, the Swahili word for “guide,” who served as the central narrator for the troupe known as the Storytellers of the Pride Lands. The 18 performers used rich storytelling techniques, blending dance, language, and music to tell Simba’s tale like never before.
A Contemporary Retelling with Heart
“The approach that we’ve taken with ‘Tale of the Lion King’ is that this is a story that was passed on from generation to generation, and now it’s come here to Disney California Adventure Park.” – Susana Tubert, Creative Director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment

Featuring new musical arrangements of iconic songs like “Circle of Life,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and “Hakuna Matata,” the show honored the cultural roots of The Lion King in a truly immersive way. Live drumming, rhythmic vocals, and authentic choreography transformed a temporary stage into something timeless.
Though short-lived, the show’s portable Palisades Stage added a touch of intimacy and energy to Paradise Gardens Park. The Incredicoaster and Pixar Pier served as a fitting backdrop for the production.
I caught one of the performances in between sessions at the D23 Expo 2019, and I’m excited to share the full experience with you.
