The Grand Debut on Television

Televised on April 26, 1998, just four days after the official opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, “Animal Kingdom: The First Adventure” aired as part of The Wonderful World of Disney. This hour-long television special offered viewers a first-hand look into Walt Disney World Resort’s newest and largest theme park.

Introduced by then-Disney President and CEO Michael Eisner, the special showcased the park’s groundbreaking blend of themed entertainment, live animals, and conservation storytelling. As Eisner noted, the park represented a new kind of Disney experience that would inspire guests to explore, learn, and protect the natural world.

Drew Carey Leads the Tour

Actor and comedian Drew Carey served as the tour guide for the special, bringing humor and excitement as he explored the 500-acre Animal Kingdom park. Along the way, viewers were treated to appearances by a star-studded cast, including Tia, Tamara, Tahj, Tavior Mowry, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel, and Paul Rodriguez.

One of the most poignant moments came during a segment with renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, who underscored the importance of the park’s animal conservation and education message.

Music, Magic, and Wildlife

In true Disney fashion, the special was filled with music and celebration. Performances by George Clinton, Lebo M, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo brought international flavor and cultural authenticity to the broadcast. These performances celebrated the spirit of Africa, a central theme in Animal Kingdom’s early design and storytelling.

The special took viewers behind the scenes of the park’s major attractions.  Attractions including Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Tree of Life, and Dinosaur. It also gave us a peek at the extensive imagineering work that made this new park possible.  From elaborate set design to groundbreaking animal habitats.
