Honoring Veterans at Magic Kingdom: The Flag Retreat Ceremony
Since Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, the Flag Retreat Ceremony has been a daily tradition in Magic Kingdom’s Town Square. The ceremony is a tribute to the veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces—a tradition with roots dating back to Walt Disney’s original vision for Disneyland.
A Ceremony of Patriotism and Gratitude
The event begins each day at 5:00 p.m., as Cast Members and the Magic Kingdom Philharmonic Marching Band members join the Dapper Dans in a moving 15-minute ceremony. Together, they honor a selected veteran guest by lowering and folding the American flag, accompanied by a live performance of patriotic music and military salutes.
A 50th Anniversary Tribute
On October 1, 2021, the ceremony took on extra significance as it marked Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary. Our video captures this powerful moment as it happened, reminding us that Walt Disney’s legacy includes not just entertainment but reverence for American values and those who defend them.
