Behind the Music: Clint Clarke and the Sound of Harmonious

When Harmonious was announced, it was clear this would be one of Disney’s most ambitious nighttime spectaculars. Blending fireworks, fountains, projections, and massive LED barges, the show fills EPCOT’s World Showcase Lagoon with breathtaking visuals. But at its heart, Harmonious is a celebration of music — and that’s where audio designer Clint Clarke comes in.

“Harmonious” at EPCOT is one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created for a Disney theme park. Debuting Oct. 1, 2021, at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the show celebrates the way Disney music inspires people the world over, carrying them away on a stream of familiar songs reinterpreted by a culturally diverse group of 240 artists from around the globe. “Harmonious” features massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, choreographed moving fountains, lights, pyrotechnics, lasers and more. Harmonious Audio Design isn’t just about volume or clarity. It’s about emotion. The music connects audiences across languages and cultures by reimagining Disney classics that feel familiar and fresh.

A Global Collaboration for Harmonious

Clint shared that over 240 vocalists, musicians, and engineers contributed to the score. Disney Live Entertainment recorded sessions in nine different countries. Artists like Luis Fonsi, Joy, Danny Gokey, and the Ndlovu Youth Choir brought cultural influences into the music.

Songs from The Lion King, Moana, Coco, Mulan, Brave, and more are remixed into a symphony of global voices. The music needed to sound authentic — not just in style, but in spirit. As Clint explained, every element of the Harmonious audio design was intentional, from instrument selection to speaker placement around the lagoon.

Bringing Harmonious to Life Through Sound

The World Showcase Lagoon itself became part of the show’s design. Speaker arrays and synchronization were critical to ensure each guest, no matter where they stood, could experience every beat.

Clint emphasized that it wasn’t just about fidelity but about feeling. He worked with engineers to blend live orchestra with vocal solos and traditional instruments, creating a unified sound reflecting each region’s musical identity.

And yes, it all had to be balanced with fireworks, lasers, and fountains.

The Result: A Fireworks Show You Can Feel

Harmonious closes EPCOT each night with a message of connection. Clint believes the music tells that story more clearly than any special effect. In our conversation, he described how guests often tear up during the finale — not because of the visuals, but because of how the music makes them feel.

That emotional reaction results from months of careful planning, engineering, and passion. Harmonious Audio Design is more than a technical achievement. It’s a creative triumph that reminds us how powerful music can be when shared across cultures and generations.
