A Conversation with Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald
During Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration, I spoke with Tom Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President and Senior Creative Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering. We met inside Space 220, where Fitzgerald discussed the inspiration and design behind the restaurant. He’s been with Imagineering since 1979 and has helped shape many iconic experiences.
According to Fitzgerald, Space 220 is more than just a restaurant—it’s a complete storytelling experience. Guests begin their journey in the Stellarvator, a simulated space elevator that launches them into orbit. As the floor rumbles and the view shifts, guests are transported to Centauri Space Station, where the real adventure begins.
The Space 220 Experience
Once inside, diners are surrounded by panoramic windows that look out into space. Floating astronauts, orbiting satellites, and even a few Disney-themed Easter eggs pass by. The visual effects are seamlessly integrated into the environment, enhancing the sense of immersion.
But it’s not just about the views. The menu is filled with modern, elevated dishes that reflect the theme. Blue Moon Cauliflower, Galactic Salmon, and the Space Station Filet are highlights. Fitzgerald explained how Imagineering partnered closely with Disney chefs. Together, they made sure the cuisine matched the experience—visually and emotionally.
