Chainsaws Replace Bagpipes at Epcot’s Canada Pavilion
After nearly 17 years of Celtic-rock energy, Off Kilter took their final bow on September 28, 2014. The beloved band had become a fixture at Epcot’s Canada Pavilion, performing live sets at The Mill Stage to a loyal crowd of fans. Their departure marked the end of an era for many Epcot regulars who had followed the group for years.
Just seven days later, on October 5, 2014, a new chapter began. The familiar melodies of bagpipes and guitars were replaced by the roaring buzz of chainsaws and the thud of axes. In their place came the all-new Canadian Lumberjack Show—a high-octane performance showcasing the skills, speed, and tradition of real lumberjack competitions.
A Surprising Soft Opening
As luck would have it, I was in Epcot that very day. In fact, I witnessed the second-ever performance of the Canadian Lumberjack Show. It was a soft opening, and I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t have my tripod with me, but I did have my camera—and I made sure to capture as much as I could.
The show featured head-to-head competitions with chainsaws, axe-throwing, and log-rolling demonstrations, bringing a very different kind of energy to the Mill Stage. While it may have been a surprising transition for longtime fans of Off Kilter, there’s no denying the excitement and unique flair this new act brought to the pavilion.
A New Tradition or Temporary Fill-In?
Reactions to the change were mixed. Some missed the music and personality of Off Kilter, while others appreciated the interactive and adrenaline-packed vibe of the lumberjacks. Only Disney knows the long-term plan for this show, but for those of us lucky enough to see its earliest moments, it was certainly a memorable experience.
