Not Your Average Ferris Wheel
In the heart of Disney California Adventure’s Paradise Pier, you’ll find a ride that looks deceptively peaceful: Mickey’s Fun Wheel. From a distance, this vibrant Ferris wheel seems like a serene way to soak in the views. But don’t be fooled—this ride has a twist.
Unlike traditional Ferris wheels, Mickey’s Fun Wheel is classified as an eccentric wheel. That means some of its gondolas don’t just rotate—they slide on interior rails, creating a swinging motion that adds a whole new level of thrill.
Choose Your Gondola Wisely
Before boarding one of the 24 colorful gondolas, you’ll need to make a choice. Eight Mickey-themed gondolas are stationary, providing a classic Ferris wheel experience with scenic views of Disneyland and California Adventure. These are great for families with little ones.
The remaining sixteen, however, are swinging gondolas themed to Goofy, Minnie, Pluto, and Donald. These glide on curved rails inside the wheel, rocking back and forth with the wheel’s rotation. It’s not for the faint of heart—motion sickness bags are included just in case.
A Classic with Disney Flair
Inspired by the original 1920 Wonder Wheel at Coney Island, Mickey’s Fun Wheel is one of only two of its kind still operating in the U.S. It debuted as the Sun Wheel when Disney California Adventure opened in 2001, featuring a radiant sun instead of Mickey’s iconic face.
The 2008 park reimagining gave the ride its current identity, adding Disney character-themed gondolas and changing the wheel’s colors from golden yellow to vibrant red. In 2013, it received a lighting upgrade to become a standout feature during the World of Color nighttime show.
