Hosts and Highlights
Originally aired on Christmas morning in 1987, the 90-minute special was hosted by Joan Lunden and Alan Thicke, with Regis Philbin returning as roving reporter. The broadcast followed a familiar format: combining parade coverage, character appearances, and behind-the-scenes previews of what’s coming soon to Walt Disney World.
Holiday Magic and Classic Parade Fun
The special opened with a high-energy montage of Disney characters enjoying all corners of Walt Disney World—from Minnie playing tennis to Pluto in EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion. The Voices of Liberty sang at the American Adventure, and the Magic Kingdom Parade featured holiday floats, high school bands, and a 1,200-member children’s choir to close out the show.
The Disney Decade Preview
1987 marked the beginning of what would become the “Disney Decade,” a period of unprecedented growth. Regis Philbin delivered a Walt Disney World Progress Report, donning a hard hat to share updates on several major projects:
- Pleasure Island: Once an abandoned water port, this new area would offer themed nightclubs, restaurants, a roller rink, and comedy venues.
- Typhoon Lagoon: The 56-acre water park promised a volcanic mountain, nine water slides, and the world’s largest wave pool.
- Grand Floridian Resort: Disney’s most luxurious hotel to date was shown through concept art and descriptions, highlighting its turn-of-the-century charm and monorail access.
- Norway Pavilion: Regis previewed the upcoming World Showcase addition, including a Viking boat ride with trolls and mythical creatures.
- Disney-MGM Studios: Regis gave an exciting overview of this brand-new movie studio, which will open in 1989. It will include soundstages, animation studios, and the Great Movie Ride.
Cinderella: A Look Back
Another major segment, “The Making of Cinderella,” took viewers into Disney animation history. Leonard Maltin introduced the film’s 1940s-era studio background, featuring commentary from Disney legends Marc Davis, Ken Anderson, and archivist Dave Smith.
EPCOT Daredevil Circus
Back at EPCOT Center, Regis took on a new role—ringmaster of the EPCOT Daredevil Circus Spectacular. The show, staged four times daily, included sway poles, trapeze acts, and a wheel of destiny—all set to delight park guests during the holidays.
A Festive Finish
The parade concluded with Santa Claus and the massive children’s choir singing in front of Cinderella Castle. From start to finish, the 1987 Disney Christmas Parade offered a glimpse into Disney’s future while honoring its timeless holiday traditions.
