Welcome to the World: The First Walt Disney World TV Special and Space Mountain’s Grand Debut 1975

Originally aired March 23, 1975, “Welcome to the World” was the very first network television special filmed entirely on location at Walt Disney World. Part of The Wonderful World of Disney series, the special marked a milestone in Disney television history and showcased the grand opening of Magic Kingdom’s groundbreaking new attraction: Space Mountain.

Star-Studded Song and Celebration

The show begins with the hosts checking into three iconic Walt Disney World resorts: Lucie at the Polynesian Village Resort, Lyle at the Contemporary Resort, and Tommy at Fort Wilderness. Each host performs musical numbers celebrating their unique resort experience, ultimately making their way to the Magic Kingdom for the big event.

A highlight includes Lucie Arnaz’s musical journey through the Polynesian.  Followed by a boat ride to the Magic Kingdom.  Then a charming encounter with banjo performer Scotty Plummer.  Meanwhile, the Rhodes Kids deliver a spirited performance from the Tomorrowland Terrace, with a stage that dramatically rises from the ground—Disney magic at its best.

From Attractions to Dedication

Throughout the special, the hosts celebrate Walt Disney World attractions both old and new. Lucie leads a musical tribute highlighting Mickey Mouse, the Haunted Mansion, the Jungle Cruise, and the Country Bears. The energy builds as the action shifts to Adventureland’s Caribbean Plaza for the “Space Mountain Eve” celebration.

The special concludes with the breathtaking dedication of Space Mountain. Viewers witnessed a grand finale featuring 50,000 balloons, 1,000 doves, and a 2,000-piece marching band lining the PeopleMover track. Astronauts Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, and Jim Erwin were on hand to lend their star power to the occasion.

A Legacy of Disney Magic

Lucie Arnaz wrapped the special with an invitation to viewers.  “We hope one day you can get down here and experience this joy for yourself.”  That sentiment still rings true today. “Welcome to the World” not only marked the opening of a Disney icon.  It set the stage for decades of unforgettable Disney television specials.

Whether you’re reliving a cherished memory or discovering it for the first time.  This special is a nostalgic tribute to the magic of Walt Disney World in the 1970s.
