Disneyland ’61 TV Special: Walt Disney Shares What’s New in the Park

Walt Disney’s Progress Report from 1961

Originally aired on May 28, 1961, Disneyland ’61 provided Walt Disney the opportunity to update television viewers on what was new and upcoming in his ever-evolving theme park. The program opens with Walt standing inside the Disneyland model shop, sharing his process: “When we first lay plans for Disneyland, they take the form of blueprints, drawings, and models.”

In this special, Walt proudly showcases new attractions and future concepts, including a whimsical topiary garden. He continues, “Since Disneyland first opened in 1955, we have seen many changes, and 1961 will be no exception.”

A Look at Tomorrow: Monorail Expansion

The special focuses on one of the most exciting new additions: the expansion of the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail. Originally opened in 1959, the monorail system was already outgrowing its original Tomorrowland loop. The 1961 upgrade would double the monorail’s route to two and a half miles, now connecting Disneyland directly to the Disneyland Hotel.

Walt takes viewers back to footage from 1954 to show how the park’s transportation systems evolved from dream to reality. His commentary ties the futuristic vision of the monorail to a practical transportation solution, highlighting its significance beyond theme park entertainment.

Followed by a True-Life Adventure

The original airing of Disneyland ’61 was paired with the True-Life Adventure film, The Olympic Elk, giving audiences both a magical look at the park and a nature documentary in classic Disney fashion.
