A Star-Studded Visit to Disneyland

On March 22, 1970, The Wonderful World of Disney aired a memorable episode titled Disneyland Showtime. Unlike previous specials, this one broke tradition by featuring no formal host. Instead, the story unfolded through the adventures of its stars—including the Osmond Brothers, Kurt Russell, and actress E.J. Peaker.

A Musical Mix-Up at the Park

The plot centers on the Osmonds arriving at Disneyland to prepare for an upcoming performance. However, a twist in the day’s plan sees Donny and Jay Osmond getting separated from the group. While the rest of the team scrambles to track them down, Donny and Jay go off to explore Disneyland’s attractions, creating a charming mix of park highlights and sibling antics. Despite the detour, the group reunites in time to perform as scheduled.

A Haunted Highlight with Kurt Russell

Later in the episode, Kurt Russell offers viewers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the Haunted Mansion. The attraction had just opened in 1969 and was the last to be personally planned by Walt Disney before his passing. Kurt walks audiences through the eerie halls, sharing background on what made the mansion such a technological and creative marvel.

Though Walt introduced concepts for the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean on the Disneyland 10th Anniversary special in 1965, the Mansion didn’t open until two years after Pirates. Disneyland Showtime gave viewers at home a fresh look at one of the park’s most iconic rides.

You may want to jump right to the first look behind the scenes of the Haunted Mansion, you’ll find it at the 36:18 mark.
