Disney Dives Deep in 1986
On January 24, 1986, Disney aired a primetime television special to celebrate the debut of its newest EPCOT Center pavilion: The Living Seas. Hosted by the charming John Ritter, The Living Seas Opening Special 1986 gave viewers a dynamic behind-the-scenes look at this cutting-edge attraction and Disney’s long-standing fascination with the ocean.
More than just a promotional piece, the special was a blend of entertainment, science, and magic. Ritter guided viewers through the concept and construction of the pavilion, offering glimpses of its iconic Hydrolators, Caribbean Coral Reef aquarium, and seabase station.
A Star-Studded Splash
The special also celebrated the wonder of the sea through music and celebrity appearances. Highlights included Olivia Newton-John performing “The Dolphin Song” and Laura Branigan delivering a heartfelt rendition of “If I Were a River.” Adding a pop culture twist, Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon made an appearance via the “Rio” music video—perfectly on theme for this water-centric broadcast.
Dr. Robert Ballard, renowned for discovering the wreckage of the Titanic, made a guest appearance to discuss ocean exploration. His segment connected real-world science with the pavilion’s mission to educate and inspire.
The Living Seas Opening Special 1986 captured the spirit of EPCOT’s original mission: to inform, inspire, and entertain. It brought viewers into the magic of discovery, merging Disney storytelling with scientific wonder. Decades later, the special remains a nostalgic reminder of when EPCOT truly was the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
