The Magic Continues: Disneyland 1996 Press Kit Highlights a Year of Expansion

The momentum continued into the next year after the incredible success of Disneyland’s 30th anniversary celebration in 1995. The 1996 Disneyland press kit showcased the company’s efforts to make that year one of the biggest in the park’s history. Walt Disney once promised Disneyland would never stop growing, and 1996 embodied that philosophy with three exciting new attractions.

A Look Inside the 1996 Disneyland Press Kit

The Disneyland 1996 press kit gave journalists and broadcasters everything they needed to share the latest park news. The kit typically included press releases, character bios, attraction fact sheets, promotional images, and a branded folder. Much of the attention centered around three key experiences: Captain EO, Country Bear Vacation Hoedown, and Big Thunder Ranch.

The press kit emphasized that 1996 was not just about new rides but about continuing Walt Disney’s vision. One press release declared 1996 “the biggest year ever” at Disneyland and outlined ongoing celebrations, special giveaways, and daily entertainment.

Country Bear Vacation Hoedown Returns with Fresh Fun

By the time the press kit circulated, the Country Bear Vacation Hoedown was already open. It was a seasonal reprogramming of the beloved Audio-Animatronic bears. The reimagined show gave guests a summery version of the classic attraction, with country music, humor, and new scenes.

Big Thunder Ranch and Captain EO Join the Magic

Big Thunder Ranch was set to open for the summer season. Offering a rustic western atmosphere with live entertainment, petting zoos, and barbecue dining, this addition allowed families to slow down and enjoy the frontier charm.

Captain EO, a cutting-edge 3D sci-fi musical film starring Michael Jackson, returned to Disneyland as a major re-launch. Produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the attraction gave guests pioneering visual effects and an unforgettable soundtrack.

Celebrate and Win with Daily Giveaways

Through September 6, Disneyland offered guests the chance to win a brand new Pontiac Firebird and other magical surprises. These giveaways, often highlighted in park signage and press coverage, helped generate daily excitement during the anniversary year.

Touring the Park in 1996

Beyond the new attractions, the press kit included a detailed tour of the entire Disneyland experience. Visitors were encouraged to explore all seven magical lands—from the charm of Main Street, U.S.A., to the futuristic thrills of Tomorrowland. Promotional materials emphasized how the new attractions integrated seamlessly into the timeless magic guests loved.

In true Disney style, the 1996 press kit helped bridge nostalgia and innovation, capturing the spirit of growth that has defined Disneyland since opening day.
