The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson (1990): A Heartfelt Tribute

Honoring the Magic Behind the Muppets

Originally aired on November 21, 1990, The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson was a one-hour television special paying tribute to the creator of the Muppets. The program beautifully brought together characters from The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock in a touching, humorous, and musical remembrance.

A Story Only the Muppets Could Tell

The special begins with Kermit the Frog away on a trip, leaving Fozzie Bear in charge of the week’s show. As the Muppets scramble to prepare, they receive a note from Kermit asking them to dedicate the show to Jim Henson. The twist? None of them know who Jim Henson is. What follows is a heartfelt and often comedic journey of discovery as the Muppets begin to understand just how deeply they are connected to this mysterious figure.

This is also a moment of significance for Muppet history—it marks the first official performance of Kermit the Frog by Steve Whitmire, following Jim Henson’s passing earlier that year.

Celebrity Guests and Personal Stories

The special includes appearances by several of Jim’s friends and collaborators, each sharing personal stories and tributes. Carol Burnett, Ray Charles, John Denver, Steven Spielberg, Harry Belafonte, and Frank Oz are among them. Their heartfelt memories help paint a picture of Jim’s kindness, creativity, and the profound impact he had on both pop culture and personal lives.

A Musical Farewell

One of the most memorable moments of the special is the performance of “Just One Person.” Robin the Frog convinces the Muppets to go ahead with the tribute, and as the song begins, more characters slowly join in—including beloved faces from Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock. The ensemble grows with every verse, creating a powerful and emotional celebration of Jim Henson’s legacy.

End of an Era, Start of a New Chapter

In addition to Steve Whitmire debuting as Kermit, the special also features one of Richard Hunt’s final performances.  Richard sadly passed away in 1992. The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson stands not only as a tribute to its namesake but also as a turning point in Muppet history.
