On December 6, 2012, Magic Kingdom guests experienced an unforgettable moment in Disney Parks history—the official opening of New Fantasyland. As part of the most significant expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, the land welcomed guests with music, magic, and newly reimagined attractions celebrating beloved Disney characters.
A Musical Welcome to a New Chapter
The opening ceremony featured actress Ginnifer Goodwin as host, joined by an exceptional performance from “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks. Their musical tribute took audiences through the stories and characters featured in the expansion. The show included medleys inspired by Snow White, Casey Jr., The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast.
Attractions That Set the Stage
Although the official opening was in December, many attractions had already welcomed guests. In spring 2012, The Barnstormer, featuring The Great Goofini, reopened alongside the whimsical Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station and the expanded Dumbo the Flying Elephant experience. These early openings gave guests a taste of what was to come.
A Land Still Growing
New Fantasyland’s December debut was only part of the transformation. Princess Fairytale Hall followed in 2013, offering a royal meet-and-greet space for Disney Princesses. Then, in 2014, the crowning jewel of the expansion arrived: the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This family-friendly roller coaster quickly became a favorite with its innovative ride system and immersive storytelling.
A Legacy of Magic
The opening of New Fantasyland marked more than just new attractions. It honored Walt Disney’s legacy by expanding the magic and wonder of his original vision for Fantasyland. Each corner of the land—from Beast’s Castle to Ariel’s Grotto—guests into the timeless stories they loved, brought to life with modern Imagineering magic.
Even today, the magic of that moment in 2012 continues to resonate with guests. New Fantasyland remains one of the most cherished areas of Magic Kingdom, where fairytales become reality and dreams come true.
