The D23 Expo 2015 brought Disney fans together to celebrate everything magical—including one of Disneyland’s most beloved attractions. In a lively “Safari So Good” session, Disney honored the Jungle Cruise’s 60th anniversary with an all-star panel of skippers and Imagineers.
Former Skippers Share Stories from the River
Panelists included Jungle Cruise skippers from multiple decades who reflected on the attraction’s evolution. From its original 1955 opening to present-day voyages, each shared their funniest guest moments and favorite changes, highlighting how this classic continues to entertain with humor and heart.
They discussed the Jungle Cruise’s transformation from a serious river adventure to a comedy-laced journey through the world’s most dangerous rivers. Along the way, they gave shoutouts to their favorite puns, backstage antics, and how the role of skipper has grown into a true Disney Parks tradition.
A New Adventure: Skipper Canteen Announced
One of the biggest surprises came when Kevin Lively, a former skipper turned Walt Disney Imagineer, took the stage to announce a brand-new experience: the Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.
The restaurant would open later that year in the former Adventureland Veranda space. With themed dining, tropical fare, and backstory connections to the Jungle Cruise lore, it extended the attraction’s storytelling into a brand-new dining experience.
Fans got an early look at concept art, menu inspiration, and even hints about Easter eggs hidden throughout the new venue—all tied to the Jungle Navigation Company.
A Tribute to the Backside of Water
The Jungle Cruise is more than just a boat ride—it’s a legacy. “Safari So Good” reminded fans of how this original Disneyland attraction continues to evolve with humor, character, and charm. Whether you’re a skipper at heart or love the backside of water, this D23 panel delivered laughs, nostalgia, and plenty of behind-the-scenes magic.
