A Tropical Tribute to Disney Innovation
Few attractions connect to Walt Disney as directly as the Enchanted Tiki Room. When it debuted at Disneyland in 1963, it brought something new to themed entertainment—singing birds, talking tiki gods, and choreographed flowers.
It was also the first attraction to use Audio-Animatronics. This groundbreaking technology became the foundation for attractions like Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and the 1964 World’s Fair exhibits.
From Dining Concept to Attraction Classic
Walt Disney originally envisioned the Tiki Room as a themed restaurant where guests would enjoy tropical meals under a chorus of singing birds. That idea soon evolved.
During the Tiki Room’s 50th anniversary in 2013, Imagineer Wally Crump explained how the show concept became the focus. Walt shifted the spotlight from dining to storytelling, and the result was iconic.
The Tiki Room uses over 150 synchronized Audio-Animatronic birds, flowers, drummers, and tiki figures. Their cheerful performance of the Sherman Brothers’ “Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” remains one of Disney’s catchiest tunes.
Tiki Room Arrives in Walt Disney World
When Magic Kingdom opened in 1971, a nearly identical version of the show—Tropical Serenade—was part of opening day. Though the main show remained unchanged, the pre-show and surrounding area featured unique elements for Florida.
Over time, the show saw updates. Yet the heart of the experience stayed the same. It’s a lively blend of music, color, and Disney charm.
A Look at the 2019 Version
This edition of SamsDisneyDiary features the 2019 version of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Walt Disney World. After a brief reimagining in the early 2000s, the show was restored to its classic style.
Guests once again hear the voices of José, Michael, Pierre, and Fritz. The 2019 version is a faithful tribute to the original with bright tropical lighting and upbeat songs.
Whether seeing it for the first time or reliving a memory, the Tiki Room continues to deliver smiles.
A Legacy Worth Celebrating
The Enchanted Tiki Room is more than a show—it’s a part of Walt’s legacy. It helped launch Disney’s use of lifelike animatronics and set the stage for immersive storytelling in theme parks.
