Opening Day Coaster Turned Pixar Star
California Screamin’ was a signature opening day attraction at Disney California Adventure in 2001. It was the fastest coaster in the park, reaching up to 55 miles per hour, and the only one at Disneyland Resort with an inversion. Located on Paradise Pier, it quickly became a fan-favorite thrill ride thanks to its smooth track and thrilling launch.
In 2018, Paradise Pier underwent a major transformation into Pixar Pier, and the coaster was reimagined as the Incredicoaster. Though the track layout stayed the same, Imagineers added a new storyline, sound effects, and show scenes inspired by The Incredibles.
Story Meets Speed
The new version of the ride begins with Dash counting down the launch as reporters interview the Incredibles for the coaster’s opening. Trouble strikes when Jack-Jack escapes from Edna Mode, who’s babysitting while the rest of the family attends the event. A high-speed chase follows as each family member tries to catch the mischievous baby.
Adding music, character figures, and tunnels filled with visual effects brings a fresh narrative layer to the thrilling ride.
Compare the Coasters Side by Side
In this episode of SamsDisneyDiary, you’ll experience three full rides. First, a side-by-side comparison video lets you see the original California Screamin’ and the new Incredicoaster simultaneously. Then, we ride California Screamin’ solo, followed by a complete ride-through of the Incredicoaster.
It’s the perfect way to appreciate the evolution of storytelling without changing the physical thrill. Whether you prefer the minimalist charm of California Screamin’ or the Pixar-powered excitement of the Incredicoaster, one thing’s certain—it’s a top-tier Disney coaster either way.
