Disneyland 10th Anniversary: A Walt Disney Wonderful World of Color episode featuring Walt Disney (1965). In true Walt fashion, he spent most of the show looking forward, not back. Along with the Disneyland ambassador, Julie Reihm Walt takes us on a WED Imagineering tour, where the Imagineers are working on the latest attractions for Disneyland.
Mary Blair is working on the It’s a small world façade for Disneyland. It’s a Small World was set to be relocated to Disneyland after the Worlds Fair. John Hench, who Walt calls Johnny, is working on the new Plaza Inn restaurant. One of Walt’s Nine Old Men, Marc Davis, is working on the concept art of the “House of Illusion.” Roland, aka Rolly Crump, is working on the interior decorations for the “House of Illusion,” or Museum of the weird as Rolly calls it. Walt continues to a scale model of the new area at Disneyland, it’s the Haunted Mansion, but interestingly enough, he never calls it the Haunted Mansion. The new attraction is being called the House of Illusion, The Museum of the Weird, The Haunted House, and The Haunted Mansion. We all know what name they went with, The Haunted Manion.
The Model also included New Orleans Square, along with concept art. The concept art consists of the Blue Bayu Lagoon. Walt explains the boat ride that will take passengers through the Bayu and down the waterfall into the age of pirates. We then get to see Blaine Gibson working on full-scale Pirates models that will be animated and part of the show. Walt walks through the model shop and a scale model of the attraction ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.”
After a celebration in front of Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle featuring a giant Birthday cake with ten candles, Walt gives us a brief history of the park, with some construction images followed by a tour of some of the current attractions, a fantastic time capsule of Disneyland in 1965. Those attractions include; Matterhorn, Jungle Cruise, the Flying Saucers, Mine Train Through Nature Wonderland, and the Enchanted Tiki Room. The show ends with a Dixieland band on the Mark Twain Riverboat.
