A Walk Through Time: Pop Century’s Shadow Box Tour (2014)

With over 25 resorts at Walt Disney World, there’s truly something for everyone. From deluxe stays to value accommodations, each resort immerses you in unique Disney storytelling. For me, when it comes to value resorts, Disney’s Pop Century is a nostalgic favorite—celebrating the unforgettable fads of the 1950s through the 1990s.

The theming is unbeatable. Iconic displays highlight each decade with playful details: Lady and the Tramp statues and bowling pins from the 1950s, yo-yos and Play-Doh from the 1960s, disco balls and 8-track tapes from the 1970s, Rubik’s Cubes and Roger Rabbit in the 1980s, and early cell phones and laptops in the 1990s. Add in the Disney Skyliner station connecting Pop Century to Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and it’s easy to see why this resort stands out.

Behind the Front Desk: The Shadow Box Story

Did you notice the display cases across from the check-in counters? Those shadow boxes aren’t just decorative—they’re curated time capsules, telling the story of each decade and how Pop Century celebrates those moments in history.

Before the pandemic, cast members would occasionally lead a “Shadow Box Tour” around 3:30 p.m. It was something I always meant to do, but let’s be honest—at that time of day, I was usually in one of the parks. Then in 2014, heading back to Pop Century for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, I found myself in the right place at the right time.

That’s when I recorded the full Shadow Box Tour—a private look at the storytelling and details behind each decade. From fashion trends to classic toys and pop culture icons.  The tour gives insight into how Disney brings history to life through design.
