In 2018, Disney pulled back the curtain for fans in Decorating Disney: Halloween Magic, a one-hour behind-the-scenes Halloween TV special that shows how Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and even Disney Cruise Line transform for spooky season.
Hosted by Sofia Carson of Descendants fame, this Freeform special brings fans along for a secret backstage tour—to places no one usually sees—where all the magic gets made. It’s a whirlwind overnight effort transforming the Happiest Place on Earth into the most haunted one. And it all happens in a single night.
From Main Street to the High Seas
The special begins at Magic Kingdom, where Cast Members work overnight to roll out Mickey-shaped jack-o’-lanterns, fall garlands, and those iconic Mickey wreaths. We’re treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Mickey’s Boo to You Halloween Parade, including costume prep and float movement, all timed to be in place before guests arrive the following day.
At Disneyland Resort, the focus shifts to the fan-favorite Haunted Mansion Holiday, a seasonal overlay combining The Nightmare Before Christmas with the classic attraction. It even features a peek inside the design of that year’s infamous Gingerbread House centerpiece, built fresh every Halloween.
And if that wasn’t enough, the cameras even take us aboard Disney Cruise Line, where the Halloween fun continues at sea—with costumes, décor, and character appearances like only Disney can do.
A Love Letter to the Magic Makers
What sets Decorating Disney: Halloween Magic apart is the time it gives to the people behind the pixie dust. From lighting and projection teams to horticulture experts and costume designers, we meet the Cast Members who help bring Halloween magic to life across parks and ships. Their pride, passion, and precision are on full display, making this a true celebration of the creative teams behind the curtain.
The special also explores how technology and tradition combine, using modern tools to extend classic Disney storytelling during the holidays. Projection mapping, programmable lighting, themed snacks, merchandise drops—part of a coordinated effort that begins months in advance.
