Celebrating Those Who Carry Walt’s Vision Forward
During the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration, I had the privilege of speaking with Tom Thomson, a recipient of the Walt Disney Legacy Award. This honor is one of the highest recognitions a Disney cast member can receive, awarded to individuals who truly go above and beyond in service, storytelling, and commitment to Walt’s legacy.
Every few years, Disney cast members from around the world—from parks to consumer products—are invited to nominate peers who exemplify the spirit of Walt Disney. These nominations come directly from fellow cast members, making the award even more meaningful.
What It Means to Wear the Blue Legacy Pin
Legacy Award recipients are recognized by a special blue Disney name tag, setting them apart as individuals who consistently inspire excellence. It’s not just about longevity or job performance—it’s about heart, humility, and a constant focus on creating magic for others.
As Tom explained it, “Walt always believed in people, and the Legacy Award is about continuing that belief every day, onstage and backstage.”
A Legacy That Lives On
The 50th Anniversary was filled with magical moments, but spending time with a Legacy Award recipient was a reminder that Disney’s greatest magic comes from its people. Cast members like Tom Thomson are the reason guests return year after year—because of the care, consistency, and character that shine through in every interaction.
