A Historic Ride Steams Back to Life with Nostalgia and Disney Magic
On July 17, 2022, the clang of a bell and the hum of tracks signaled the return of a Disney California Adventure icon — the Red Car Trolley. After months of detailed preparation and refurbishment, the trolley once again welcomes guests aboard to experience a bit of Los Angeles history through the lens of Disney storytelling.
Bringing Back a Piece of the Past
Modeled after the Pacific Electric Railway cars that once traversed over 1,000 miles of Los Angeles streets, the Red Car Trolley transports guests back to the 1920s — the era that first greeted Walt Disney when he arrived in California. The trolley is more than just a ride; it’s a journey through time.
“I’ve always liked to think that the Red Car Trolley is kind of the heart of Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land,” shared Attractions Lead Ryan Austerman, a member of the trolley’s original 2012 opening team who helped with its return. The nostalgic charm of the trolley brings character and history to every corner it travels.
Onboard the Trolley — A Tribute to Walt
The updated experience takes guests past Buena Vista Street, Carthay Circle Restaurant, Hollywood Boulevard, and Sunset Boulevard, highlighting Walt Disney’s early days in California. Through scenic backdrops and storytelling, the ride celebrates Walt’s journey and the dream that became a legacy.
Look closely and you’ll spot historical nods like car numbers “623” (a reference to 1923, when Walt arrived in California) and “717” (marking Disneyland’s opening on July 17).
Cast Members Make the Magic
Behind the scenes, machinists, electricians, and attractions cast members all came together. To breathe life back into the Red Car Trolley. “When I go into the park, I’m able to show my daughter that I worked on this trolley and have her ride it for the first time,” said Electrician Andrew Ton.
President of Disneyland Resort Ken Potrock was among the first to experience the ride after its reopening. Joined by a proud group of cast members and engineers.
Riding Into the Future
Whether you view the Red Car Trolley as a tribute to Disney history. Or a peaceful escape through Disney California Adventure, its return adds an extra spark of magic to the park. It’s not just transportation — it’s storytelling on rails.
