Muppet Vision 3D Pre-Show: Why It Still Deserves a Standing Ovation

Muppet Vision 3D opened at Walt Disney World’s MGM Studios on May 16, 1991—exactly one year after Jim Henson’s passing. While Henson directed the main film, one of the final Muppet projects he led, the MuppetVision 3D Pre-Show was produced after his death.  Frank Oz led the team for the production. That’s also why Kermit the Frog doesn’t appear in the pre-show—a tribute to Jim Henson, the only person who had performed Kermit.

The pre-show focuses on Scooter, Gonzo, Rizzo, and other supporting Muppets who bring the chaotic warehouse setting to life., a fan-favorite moment that remains one of the funniest and most quotable experiences in any Disney park.  Disney had initially planned the experience as part of the never-built MuppetLand expansion. Even without that larger vision, MuppetVision 3D and its surrounding theater continued to honor Henson’s legacy of humor and creativity.

Pre-Show Laughter That Steals the Show

Before the 3D glasses even go on, guests step into a chaotic and endlessly clever Muppet prop warehouse. This pre-show, which plays on loop while guests wait to enter the theater, is filled with background gags, sight jokes, and lines that fans have quoted for decades.

Scooter attempts to prepare everyone for the show, but is repeatedly interrupted by Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat, and a parade of Muppet chaos. If you listen closely—and look around—you’ll find:

  • The infamous “2D Fruit Ds” on a crate
  • A literal “a net full of jello” (Annette Funicello!)
  • A Jim Henson Muppet portrait tucked away in the rafters

And the quotes? Instant classics:

  • “Debbie was sick, so the union sent me.”
  • “What foolishness would you like to see?”
  • “Rat, schmat! Besides, they’re tourists—what do they know?”

It’s smart, it’s silly, and it holds up every single time you watch it.

A Fitting Tribute to Henson’s Legacy

While the main show inside the Muppet Theater gets plenty of praise, the pre-show is a comedic masterclass. It’s tightly written, jam-packed with visual gags, and delivers timeless Muppet charm. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or watching for the first time, the pre-show proves that MuppetVision 3D* was never just about the 3D.
