Christmas in Italy is described as the warmest and most intimate holiday. It is a time when family members come together to celebrate age-old traditions. During the Epcot Festival of the Holidays, guests can experience these meaningful customs firsthand at the Italy Pavilion.
The Heartwarming Traditions of Christmas in Italy
On Christmas Eve, Italian families gather around the presepio, a nativity scene representing Bethlehem. Afterward, they attend Midnight Mass, followed by a cenone, a rich and delicious feast of traditional Italian dishes. These gatherings reflect the essence of Italian Christmas—family, faith, and food.

The Legend of La Befana
Children in Italy eagerly await La Befana, a good-hearted witch who brings gifts. Unlike Santa Claus, who arrives on Christmas Eve, La Befana visits on the eve of Epiphany. She climbs down chimneys, filling good children’s shoes with treats. However, naughty children may find a lump of coal instead! Year after year, La Befana wanders the countryside, still searching for Gesu Bambino, the baby Jesus. She leaves gifts wherever she goes, hoping to find him.
Experience La Befana at Epcot
During the Epcot Festival of the Holidays, guests have the unique opportunity to hear La Befana’s story as part of the Holidays Around the World celebration. This performance shares her heartfelt tale and the cultural significance she holds in Italian traditions. It is a must-see experience that brings holiday magic and culture together without mentioning specific years, ensuring its timeless appeal.
