“The wilderness must be explored … caw, caw, ROAR!” That’s the call of the Wilderness Explorers, and more than 23 million guests have answered it since the program began at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2013.
What Is the Wilderness Explorers Program?
Inspired by the Pixar film Up, this self-guided, interactive experience lets guests of all ages become heroes in their conservation story. By completing activities throughout the park, Explorers earn over 20 badges. These challenges focus on helping endangered species, understanding recycling, and protecting wildlife.
Each badge highlights a fun and educational mission. Whether learning about animal behavior or sustainability, the program deepens guests’ understanding of the world—all in the immersive setting of Animal Kingdom.
Meet the Cast Members Behind the Magic
At the heart of this experience are passionate cast members like Nadine, a 21-year Disney veteran and guest animal experience director. Nadine helped launch the Wilderness Explorers program alongside fellow cast member Alex in 2013.
“Watching this program come to life through the eyes of Explorers from around the globe inspires me every day,” Nadine said.
The motto, “A Wilderness Explorer is a friend to all, be a plant, or fish, or tiny mole,” came straight from Up and was brought to life thanks to the dedication of more than 600 cast members over the last decade.

A Full-Circle Moment
Victoria, a current Wilderness Explorer, learned about the program during her Disney College Program. She recently returned to that same panel—but this time, as a speaker inspiring others.
“Coming back to motivate interns who care about conservation feels incredibly rewarding,” Victoria explained.
