A Shell-ebration of Inclusive Play
Earlier this month, Disney welcomed creators and their families to an interactive product launch event. Guests got a first look at the must-have items inspired by the live-action film—culminating in a surprise appearance by Halle Bailey herself!
Carmen J. Smith, Disney’s SVP of Inclusive Strategies, emphasized the importance of creating products that reflect real-world diversity. “What makes us so different is that we reflect our world.”

More Than Just a Doll
Mattel’s new Ariel doll, crafted in Halle Bailey’s likeness—complete with her signature mole—resonated with mermaid fans of all ages. From singing dolls to full playsets featuring Ariel’s sisters, King Triton, and Ursula, the line brings the underwater kingdom to life.
Launi King, Disney’s Director of Product Design, explained the thoughtful approach to creating diverse hairstyles and characters. Noting that the greatest reward is hearing kids say, “She looks like me, and I love her hair.”
The Mermaid Ariel doll was meticulously crafted in the likeness of the film’s character. Portrayed by Halle Bailey, down to the detail of the small mole on her face.
Products That Empower and Represent
The celebration also spotlighted collaborations with Black-owned and founded brands. Black Girl Sunscreen. 30 SPF lotion made for women of color, and Carol’s Daughter, known for its natural hair care, joined the wave of products bringing cultural relevance to toy aisles.
