Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish”: A Celebration of 100 Years of Disney Magic

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new musical comedy, Wish Disney movie, premieres on November 22, 2023. This magical film tells a story about the power of wishes to change the world. As part of Disney’s 100th anniversary, the studio invited D23 Members to contribute their personal wishes, which inspired the filmmakers throughout production.

Asha, from the new Disney animated film “Wish” will also soon be coming to EPCOT, Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris.
THIS WISH – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” introduces Asha.  A sharp-witted idealist who makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force.  A little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star set out to prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars. Wondrous things can happen. Featuring the voice of Academy Award® winner Ariana DeBose as Asha.  

A Wish Brought to Life

In the Wish Disney movie, Asha—a smart, optimistic teenager—makes a wish so powerful that a cosmic force answers her: Star, a bright, lively ball of energy. Together, they embark on an unforgettable journey, proving that courage and the magic of the stars can spark change. Ariana DeBose voices Asha in this musical comedy directed by Chris Buck (“Frozen”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), featuring music by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice.

Fans’ Wishes Inspire the Filmmakers

Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, explained how fans’ wishes helped shape the Wish Disney movie. At the 2022 D23 Expo, visitors wrote their dreams on star-shaped notes and placed them on a wall at the studio’s booth. Soon, the entire wall was covered. Lee said, “We kept them.” Later, these wishes were displayed daily inside the Roy E. Disney Feature Animation Building to inspire the team during production.

A New Fairy Tale Rooted in Disney History

Set in the kingdom of Rosas, Wish Disney movie follows Asha’s quest to have her grandfather’s wish granted by King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). But Asha soon uncovers the king’s true motives. The film honors Disney’s early works through a watercolor-inspired animation style, blending traditional artistry with cutting-edge CG technology.

Honoring the Past and Looking Ahead

Directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, along with producers Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes, revealed that Wish Disney movie is filled with nods to Disney’s 100-year history. From references to Walt Disney’s Dreaming Tree to subtle visual Easter eggs, every department added details to honor the legacy. Buck noted, “It’s just who we are.”

Jennifer Lee shared that Wish Disney movie embodies Disney’s tradition of creating hopeful, heartfelt stories. “We’re here to bring hope and possibility,” she said. This film celebrates the belief that dreams can come true—just as Disney has shown audiences for a century.
