We sat down with Kirsten Lepore, the series’ writer, director, and executive producer, to learn what’s in store for Baby Groot this season.
In Season 1, Groot learned to walk, talk, and explore the galaxy as an adorable, energetic sapling. Now, in Season 2, he’s a little older—about 6 or 7 in human years—but still retains his playful, curious spirit. “He’s got the same childlike essence,” Lepore shared. “He’s growing and learning, with moments where he acts like a toddler and others where he’s wise beyond his years.”
Even More Mischief, Even Bigger Adventures
Season 2 expands Groot’s world with new adventures inspired by Lepore’s own childhood memories. “The ice cream truck episode comes from my experience,” she revealed, referencing an episode where Groot scrambles around his spaceship in search of coins for an intergalactic ice cream truck.
Another highlight? Episode 2 features Groot growing an actual, functioning nose—a wild idea Lepore pitched on a whim, never expecting it to get greenlit. “They really let me run with my weird ideas,” she laughed.
The creative team brainstormed dozens of short story ideas before narrowing them down to five. Each episode builds on Groot’s personality while introducing imaginative settings. One fan-favorite, the snow day episode, started as a simple concept of Groot playing in the snow but grew into an epic adventure with a mischievous snowman villain.
Groot’s Emoji-Like Charm
When developing Baby Groot’s character, Lepore consulted with executive producer James Gunn to stay true to the essence fans know and love. Gunn described Groot as a “bad baby” and an “emoji guy,” emphasizing his expressive, simple facial gestures. “He just strikes a pose and you understand him—like an emoji,” Lepore explained.
Fans can expect Season 2 to balance funny, relatable moments with heartfelt storytelling. “The goal was to make it more specific and personal,” Lepore said. “We want people to see a little bit of their own childhood in Groot.”
Expanding the Galaxy, One Short at a Time
Each episode features a unique location, from the familiar spaceship interior to unexpected environments like snowy landscapes. Lepore, who has a background in stop-motion animation, loved seeing the snow episode brought to life with CGI. “We really got to take advantage of the medium,” she noted.
