Disney’s Wish Movie: A Magical Journey Through Culture and Design

As colorful drones lit up the Hollywood night sky, Kachain Thongmanee stood on the red carpet outside the iconic El Capitan Theatre for the world premiere of Wish, the 62nd animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios. For Kachain, it wasn’t just a premiere—it was the celebration of a personal journey nearly two decades in the making.

From Disneyland to Disney Animation Disney Wish movie

Kachain currently supports operations at Disneyland Park, but from 2021 through early 2023, he played a key role on the Wish Visual Development team. His job: to help ensure the creative intent of the film’s designs—from environments to hairstyles—stayed consistent throughout production.

One of his proudest contributions? The deep research into the regions and cultures that inspired the story, world, and characters of Wish. That attention to authenticity helped bring cultural richness to every frame.

Reflecting Real Stories on Screen

As a child, Kachain was captivated by Disney stories, but didn’t see his Thai heritage represented. That changed with 2021’s Raya and the Last Dragon. Inspired by its Southeast Asian influences, Kachain realized the power of seeing oneself reflected in film. With Wish, he hopes to pay that moment forward.

“One of the cool things I’ve been able to do is help our audiences see themselves in our stories,” Kachain said. “It’s awesome knowing the impact we have on our guests.”

A Career Fueled by Passion, Not Just Wishes

Kachain’s Disney journey began at a Disney Store and evolved through roles in Attractions, Retail, Training, Recruitment, and even a stint at Walt Disney Imagineering. His path reminds us that big dreams require big work.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do all these things if I didn’t care so much about my current role,” he shared. “You move forward by bringing your best self to every opportunity.”
