Meet Baby Elephant Corra: A Holiday Miracle at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

This holiday season brought an unforgettable gift to Walt Disney World Resort: the birth of a beautiful African elephant calf named Corra at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Corra is the first elephant born at the park in seven years, and at just 218 pounds, she’s already winning hearts backstage as she bonds with her mother, Nadirah.

A Second-Generation Celebration

What makes Corra’s arrival extra special is that her mother, Nadirah, was also born at Animal Kingdom back in 2005. That makes Corra the park’s first second-generation calf. The proud new mom received comfort and guidance from her sister Luna during the birth. Soon, baby Corra will meet her grandmother Donna and aunt Stella, continuing the strong family bonds that are so important to elephant herds.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the elephant care team nurtures those bonds, as adult females often assist in raising young calves. These strong connections are vital during the first years of a calf’s life and last until they reach independence, typically around eight years old.

Behind-the-Scenes Care

Corra’s birth was part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. Supportings the responsible breeding of endangered animals. Nadirah became pregnant through natural breeding in early 2022 and was closely monitored throughout her 22-month pregnancy.

Animal keepers, veterinarians, and endocrinologists worked together to ensure Nadirah and her calf stayed healthy. The team used hormone tracking, ultrasound scans, and lots of love (and sweet potatoes!) to support the soon-to-be mom every step of the way.

What’s Next for Corra?

Right now, Corra is bonding backstage with her mom under the watchful eyes of Disney’s animal care experts. They’re looking for key milestones like successful nursing and healthy weight gain before introducing her to the rest of the herd. Once ready, she’ll be welcomed by the other elephants in the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna.
