Blind Runner Completes Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World

Charlotte-area runner Susan Moriceau defied the odds and completed the full 2024 Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World Resort. What makes her accomplishment even more remarkable is that Moriceau is blind. Alongside her husband, who ran tethered to her for guidance, she completed four races in four days, including Sunday’s 26.2-mile marathon.

Four Races, One Incredible Journey

Moriceau participated in all of the event’s major races: the 5K on Thursday, the 10K on Friday, a weather-shortened half marathon on Saturday, and the full marathon on Sunday. In total, she ran more than 42 miles and earned six medals—a feat that left onlookers in awe.

Despite retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that has taken most of her vision, Moriceau’s determination never wavered. She relied on the trust and guidance of her husband as they ran side by side through all four events.

From Start to Finish: Teamwork and Tenacity

Throughout the weekend, the couple made their way through all four Disney theme parks and along the connected roads of Walt Disney World Resort. The marathon alone took them through EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Moriceau finished the marathon in 5:51:08, a true testament to her resilience and strength.

After crossing the final finish line, the couple embraced in celebration and joyfully vowed to return for next year’s race weekend.
