Celebrate Lunar New Year with These Magical Disney Dragons

With the Lunar New Year marking the arrival of the Year of the Dragon, there’s no better time to dive into some of Disney’s most iconic dragon-filled tales. These fan-favorite films celebrate the strength, wisdom, and whimsy that dragons bring to the screen, making them the perfect watch companions for this festive season.

The Reluctant Dragon faces the camera sideways and has one of its legs curled up, as if sitting cross-legged while standing up. The photo’s background is yellow, and The Reluctant Dragon has a warm, happy expression.

1. The Reluctant Dragon (1941)

This animated short introduces a peace-loving dragon who prefers poetry over fire-breathing battles. A charming tale about embracing individuality, it’s an ideal kickoff to a celebration rooted in tradition and self-expression.

Maleficent in dragon form has cornered Prince Philip at the edge of a cliff. The dragon is breathing fire toward the prince, who is defending himself with a shield and sword. The background of the photo is of large flames.

2. Sleeping Beauty (1959) & Maleficent Films

No dragon list is complete without Maleficent, who transforms into a terrifying dragon in the original animated classic Sleeping Beauty. To dive deeper into her story, stream the live-action adaptations Maleficent (2014) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), starring Angelina Jolie.

Mushu and Cri-Kee are standing inside a woven surface that has been partially destroyed. Mushu has a scared and startled expression on his face, pointing to perhaps what caused the blow, while Cri-Kee looks at Mushu with confusion and slight anger.

3. Mulan (1998)

Celebrate Lunar New Year with Mushu, the pint-sized but big-hearted dragon who guides Mulan on her heroic journey. His presence symbolizes loyalty, courage, and laughter—all essential dragon traits!

Dragon Narissa fills the screen in a close up shot. The background of the photo is the interior of a building, featuring a wooden ceiling and the top of five curtains.

4. Enchanted (2007)

This magical mix of animation and live-action features Queen Narissa’s transformation into a dragon in a dramatic New York City showdown. It’s a fun twist on traditional fantasy, perfect for the whole family.

Elliot and Peter are in a forest with towering trees. They are both facing each other, laying down, and looking at an electronic device they have placed on the soil. Peter is wearing a long-sleeve, green top and black bermuda shorts.

5. Pete’s Dragon (2016) & Pete’s Dragon (1977)

Elliot, the lovable invisible dragon, stars in both the 2016 reimagining and the original 1977 musical. These heartwarming stories highlight themes of friendship and belonging, perfect for family viewing.

Raya and Sisu are in a wooden boat that is on water. They are sitting at the back end of the boat, and they are looking at each other, smiling. Raya wears a form-fitting, yellow tunic and a short-sleeve, brown jacket with detailing.

6. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

Journey to Kumandra and meet Sisu, a quirky and self-doubting water dragon who teams up with warrior Raya to unite their divided land. Full of magic, humor, and heart, it’s an ideal pick for Lunar New Year festivities.
