Gullah Magic: A Historic Addition to Disney Springs Art Walk

If you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort, there’s a stunning new addition to the Disney Springs Art Walk: A Canvas of Expression. This piece marks one of the rare times in Art Walk history that a Disney cast member has contributed an installation—and it’s a historic moment.

A Powerful Tribute to Heritage

Titled “Gullah Magic,” the piece was created by Disney Live Entertainment Senior Production Artisan Marcella Swett. Completed for Black History Month, the artwork tells the story of the Gullah people. These descendants of West and Central Africans continue to live in parts of the South, including Florida. Inspired by her own Gullah roots, Marcella brings together cultural, historical, and personal elements in this visual narrative.

Cultural Symbols and Storytelling

Marcella’s painting features seagrass baskets and grains of rice—symbols of Gullah artistry. Three distinct faces represent the past, present, and future of the Gullah people. With bold visuals and meaningful storytelling, the piece encourages deeper appreciation for this influential culture.

A Familiar Face for Disney Fans

Marcella is no stranger to Disney fans. Her chalk art has previously been featured at Disneyland Resort during Black History Month as part of the Celebrate Soulfully campaign. She also appeared on the Disney Parks Blog in 2022, recognized for her unique artistic voice.

Inspiring Future Storytellers

As a former art teacher, Marcella is passionate about mentoring the next generation. She recently welcomed students from the Osceola County School for the Arts to observe her process and learn from her experience. This event was part of Disney’s Future Storytellers initiative, aimed at inspiring young artists.

“I love seeing an artist take something personal to them and share it with everyone who sees their art,” said Osceola County teacher Trenton Corbett. “That’s what I encourage my students to do—bring life into their work. Marci helped reinforce that message beyond the classroom.”

Celebrating Soulfully at Disney Springs

With “Gullah Magic,” Marcella joins Black artists like Nneka Jones, Nardstar, and Ernest Shaw who have added vibrant layers to the Art Walk. Each piece reflects cultural pride and artistic excellence, enhancing the Celebrate Soulfully initiative across Disney parks.
