Double Lung Transplant Survivor Conquers Disney Princess 10K

An Inspirational Finish at Walt Disney World

Just four years after a life-saving double lung transplant, 67-year-old Kim Schaefer from Windsor, Colorado crossed the finish line of the Disney Princess 10K presented by CORKCICLE. Cheered on by her family, cast members, and Minnie Mouse, Schaeferโ€™s triumphant run at Walt Disney World marked a powerful chapter in her personal fairy tale.

A Journey of Resilience

Kimโ€™s journey began back in 2010 when she first experienced breathing difficulties during a family vacation. Eventually diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, her condition worsened over the years, leading to additional diagnoses of sarcoidosis and pulmonary hypertension by 2019. By 2020, she required two oxygen machines just to move around her home.

That same year, she became a candidate for a double lung transplant. Her doctors gave her just a 50% chance of survival due to her age and existing health conditions. Despite the odds, Kim underwent the surgeryโ€”and began envisioning a new goal: completing a runDisney race.

A Family Celebration on the Course

On February 24, 2024, Kim made that vision a reality. Participating in her first race ever, she ran the 10K alongside her daughter and granddaughter. They all crossed the finish line together in a touching moment of triumph and gratitude.

โ€œItโ€™s like a dream come true,โ€ said Kim, who credited her motivation to the runDisney race and the joy of sharing the experience with her family. After the race, they celebrated by enjoying the rest of their weekend at Walt Disney World.

The Magic of runDisney

The Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend is the third of four major runDisney events held during the 2023โ€“24 season. Runners of all levels take part in events that wind through Disney parks. Accompanied by unique entertainment and iconic character appearances.

This yearโ€™s Princess 10K was especially memorable.  Not only for its inspiring participants like Kim but also for the sense of community and celebration it fostered. Events like these highlight the spirit of runDisneyโ€”where dreams, determination, and Disney magic come together.
