Set just months after the finale of the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997). Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 picks up the story with the beloved mutant team grappling with the loss of Professor X and their evolving roles in a world that continues to fear them.
The X-Men Return
Led by Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Wolverine, the team reunites with familiar faces including Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Morph, Bishop, and Nightcrawler. Voiced by returning and new cast members, the series delivers high-stakes action while staying true to its emotional roots.

Executive producer Brad Winderbaum explains, “The X-Men are a team that protects a world that hates and fears them.” That ongoing struggle fuels much of the conflict as Magneto, voiced by Matthew Waterson, steps into Professor X’s shoes to lead the team and carry forward his dream of peace.
A Legacy of Deeper Themes
Like the original series, X-Men ’97 explores powerful themes of inclusiveness, racism, civil rights, and social justice. Echoing the foundation laid by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Chris Claremont in the comics. Winderbaum calls it a “soap opera” at its core, built on complex character dynamics in a divided world.

Impact on a Generation
X-Men: The Animated Series was a creative touchstone for many of today’s Marvel Studios filmmakers, including Kate Herron (Loki) and Nia DaCosta (The Marvels). “It never talked down to me,” Winderbaum says. “It treated me like an adult and made me feel real emotion.”
