Orlando has officially been named the Best Sports Business City for Attracting Events by Sports Business Journal (SBJ) in its highly anticipated 2024 rankings. The announcement took place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort, one of more than 35 sports venues that helped solidify Orlando as a national leader in sports tourism.
A Win for Orlando’s Sports Scene
This ranking reflects years of planning, investment, and community support to make Orlando a premier destination for sports events of all sizes. According to SBJ, their rankings considered more than 1,500 events held or awarded between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2023. The cities selected have a strong infrastructure including convention spaces, sports venues, and dedicated sports commissions.
“Orlando’s elevation to the top spot in this year’s rankings is a testament to the vibrant collaboration between world-class venues, dedicated sports commissions, and the enthusiastic community,” said Abe Madkour, executive editor at SBJ.
Strategic Partnerships Drive Success
The Greater Orlando Sports Commission (GO Sports) has been key to this recognition. From NCAA championships to youth sports and major league events, Orlando continues to build its resume as a sports destination. The city has also strengthened ties with partners like Disney and AAU, expanding championship basketball events at Walt Disney World.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer emphasized that sports bring people together and drive economic growth. “This recognition highlights the important role that sports plays in our community and is something that all of Orlando can be proud of.”
Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings added. “We will continue to invest in our infrastructure, our people, and our partnerships. To ensure that Orlando and Orange County remain leaders in sports business for years to come.”
Looking Ahead
Orlando joins a powerhouse top five that includes Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Indianapolis. This recognition reflects not just past success, but the city’s future-forward strategy in sports and tourism.
