How Disneyland Is Driving Toward a Greener Tomorrow with Clean Transportation

As The Walt Disney Company continues on the road to sustainability and pursues ambitious environmental goals for 2030 โ€” including achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions โ€” Disneyland Resort is exploring innovative solutions in clean transportation. In honor of Earth Month, Disney Parks Blog has shared a closer look at four eco-friendly ways guests can travel to, from, and around Disneyland Resort using clean, low or zero-emissions vehicles.

1. Clean Trams from the Start

Your sustainable journey at Disneyland begins in the parking lot. The trams that transport guests from the parking areas to the entrance operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). By doing so, they help eliminate approximately 56,000 gallons of diesel use each year.

2. All Aboard the Zero-Emission Monorail

The Disneyland Monorail has been an icon since 1959 โ€” and itโ€™s also an early example of green transportation. This zero-emission ride produces no direct pollutants, offering a smooth and sustainable way to move through the resort. Other attractions, such as the Disneyland Railroad and Mark Twain Riverboat, run on biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil. That saves an estimated 200,000 gallons of petroleum diesel annually!

3. Electrifying the Resort Fleet

Behind the scenes, Disneyland is also transforming its own vehicle fleet. With more than 400 vehicles on property, the goal is to electrify the entire fleet both onstage and backstage. In the past year alone, nearly 10% of vehicles have already been converted to zero-emissions electric vehicles.

4. Solar-Powered Rides and More

Several fan-favorite attractions are part of Disneylandโ€™s clean transportation story. Main Street Vehicles, Jungle Cruise boats, and the Sailing Ship Columbia now run on compressed natural gas. Meanwhile, Radiator Springs Racers uses partial power from 1,400 solar panels, making it a ride thatโ€™s as bright as it is thrilling.

And thereโ€™s more change comingโ€”Autopia, one of Disneylandโ€™s opening-day attractions, will be electrified in the next few years. That move is another powerful step toward a greener future.

Join the Ride Toward Sustainability

Every sustainable vehicle at Disneyland is part of Disneyโ€™s larger commitment to environmental stewardship โ€” a promise known as Disney Planet Possible. So the next time you ride a tram, cruise on the Monorail, or explore the park in a classic vehicle, remember: youโ€™re not just taking in the sights โ€” youโ€™re helping support a cleaner tomorrow.
