Secrets of the Octopus Premieres for Earth Day Narrated by Paul Rudd

In the depths of the ocean, one of natureโ€™s most mysterious and intelligent creatures takes center stage in the new three-part National Geographic series, Secrets of the Octopus. Premiering April 21 on National Geographic and April 22 on Disney+ and Hulu, this groundbreaking series celebrates Earth Day by diving into the astonishing world of the octopus.

Director and DOP Adam Geiger operates a jib arm with Producer/Camera Operator Rory McGuiness and Camera Assistant Woody Spark, surrounded by knee-deep water.

Narrated by Paul Rudd, Produced by James Cameron

Narrated by Paul Rudd and developed by Oscar-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer-at-Large James Cameron, Secrets of the Octopus offers a breathtaking exploration of these underwater masterminds. Known for his love of oceanic exploration, Cameron hopes the series reminds audiences how connected we are to nature. โ€œWe must preserve the natural ecosystem of the planet,โ€ he shared during the 2024 Winter TCA press event.

The Intelligent and Elusive Octopus

Octopuses are known not only for their camouflage and shapeshifting but also for their intelligence. Cameron described them as โ€œmastermindsโ€ and โ€œso incredibly alien,โ€ noting their advanced consciousness compared to other sea creatures.

Executive producer Adam Geiger highlighted how forming a connection with an octopus requires time and trust. โ€œIt can take hours or days before an octopus accepts your presence,โ€ Geiger said. โ€œBut when it does, its personality shines.โ€

Amazing Adaptations and Behavior

National Geographic Explorer Dr. Alex Schnell praised the octopusโ€™s ability to camouflage, explaining they can change color in a fifth of a second and even shift the texture of their skin from smooth to bumpy to match their surroundings.

Author and naturalist Sy Montgomery, whose book inspired the series, shared fascinating insights into octopus mimicry and deception. โ€œThey lie,โ€ she explained, referencing their impersonation of venomous species to deter predators. โ€œThrough camouflaging, they say: โ€˜Iโ€™m a lionfish.'โ€

A Human-Centered Filmmaking Approach

The series embraces a patient and observational approach, relying on underwater immersion rather than high-tech solutions. The result is a rare and intimate glimpse into octopus behavior, social dynamics, and survival strategies.

Secrets of the Octopus invites viewers to witness the wonder of our oceans, highlighting the delicate beauty and intelligence of marine life. Itโ€™s the perfect way to honor Earth Dayโ€”by discovering the deep truths of one of the oceanโ€™s most remarkable inhabitants.
