Disney Earth Month Upcycling Efforts Celebrate Sustainability
If you haven’t heard, Disney is going all out for Earth Month this year with National Geographic, spotlighting ways the company is protecting, restoring, and celebrating ourHOME. One of the most creative approaches? Upcycling—transforming used materials into something of even higher value and purpose.

Sustainable Costumes at Walt Disney World
At Walt Disney World, the theming extends far beyond the attractions. Cast members at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind wear costumes made from recycled polyester, with 70% of the fabric made from recycled materials. At TRON Lightcycle / Run, costumes also feature recycled components. Proving that futuristic fashion can still be eco-friendly. Even food and beverage teams are getting in on the effort, wearing aprons made from 100% recycled materials.

Circulating Smiles at Tokyo Disney Resort
At Tokyo Disney Resort, the “Circulating Smiles” program is bringing new life to old costume fabric. Tote bags made from retired outfits from Tokyo Disneyland’s “China Voyager” restaurant are now sold at Adventureland Bazaar and Steamboat Mickey’s. Space Mountain fans can also grab patch badges made from actual cast member costumes. Perfect for decorating bags, jackets, or anything else you want to personalize.

Recycled Fabric Magic on Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line is sailing toward sustainability, too. New costumes for crew members at deck bars and Cabanas are now made from recycled water bottles. Onboard the Disney Wish, more than 60% of the fabric used in the theatrical production of The Little Mermaid was crafted from ocean-recovered plastics. These recycled materials are transformed into luxurious fabrics that look and feel just like silk and cotton, blending elegance with innovation.

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Repurposing Project
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is making bold moves with its Repurposing Project. Broken wooden bench slats have been creatively reused. Recycled to construct cabinets, turnstiles, and even more benches. At locations like the Jungle River Cruise dock and Theater in the Wild. By the end of 2024, 1,500 wooden pieces will find new life, including installations at Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre.

Disney Planet Possible: A Commitment to ourHOME
From Florida to Tokyo and Hong Kong, Disney cast members around the world are making sustainability a daily mission. These upcycled creations reflect the company’s broader promise to take measurable action for people and wildlife. So, next time you visit a Disney park or resort. Keep an eye out for these Earth-friendly innovations. And consider how you can help protect ourHOME, too.
