Just in time for Mother’s Day, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge welcomed a special new resident to the savanna—Julien, a critically endangered baby addax. With only about 100 left in the wild, every addax birth counts. Julien’s arrival marks an important step forward in animal conservation.
A Special Addition to the Herd
Julien is the first male baby addax born at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Standing over two feet tall, he’s already winning hearts with his curly horns and impressive head of hair. His name is a sweet tribute to his parents, Juniper and Allen, who are also part of the Lodge’s addax herd.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of just 21 AZA-accredited institutions in the U.S. caring for addax. That makes this birth even more meaningful.
Conservation in Action
Julien’s arrival supports Disney’s larger mission to protect endangered species. The team follows the Species Survival Plan through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This coordinated effort ensures the survival of at-risk animals like the addax.

A Mother’s First Moments
Julien’s mom, Juniper, has a special history of her own. She was born at Animal Kingdom Lodge and is now stepping into her new role as a first-time mom. The same keepers who once cared for her as a calf are now helping her raise Julien.

Soon, you’ll be able to spot Julien and Juniper on the Sunset Savanna. This area offers one of the only places outside the Saharan desert to view an addax calf up close. It’s a rare and magical experience you won’t want to miss.
